On Sunday 6 August in the afternoon from 12-5pm at the Royal Natal Yacht Club, six DHS learners participated in an Introduction to Sailing afternoon, along with a few other boys who are existing junior sailors.
The boys were given a talk by the Commodore, Graham Rose. The afternoon was facilitated by Mrs Jennifer Weyer who is the Club’s Sailing Instructor for Juniors.
They were given a short introduction to sailing and some instruction on rigging the boats and basic how to sail instructions … and then it was straight to the practical!
They all got involved rigging the 4 RS Teras ready for sailing and off they went, taking turns to do 2 laps around the demarcated area in the harbor in front of the RNYC lawns. They provided much entertainment for the crowds as they learnt very fast about needing to duck under the swinging boom and how to capsize as you turn!
By the end of the afternoon they had learnt enough to have a team race for which the Commodore sponsored chocolate bars as a prize.
The boys had a great afternoon and show much potential as future sailors!
On Friday afternoon this week the boys will be back at the Royal Natal Yacht Club learning to sail bigger boats!
All the best with this new venture!
