DHS hosted its third Rapid Chess Tournament on Saturday 5 May 2018.
A total of 67 participants entered this open individual tournament. It was such a delight to see so many DHS learners participating in the tournament – about 20 in total which is far more than in the past. The majority of the participants were from primary schools in and around Durban.
Mr Pinheiro, our Head Master, welcomed all the players and wished them well for the day. The arbiter for the day was Rahul Beekrum (Class of 2010). It is always such a pleasure when our Old Boys give up their time to do something for the School.
This CHESSA rated 7 round Swiss tournament, comprising 25/25 minutes, commenced at about 9am. The AJ Human Functions room was dead silent whilst the games were on. The calibre of the senior (adult) contestants ensured a tough battle for the coveted first prize.
The final round ended at 17:30.
The winners were as follows:
First Prize went to Ntando Zwakala – he received the Rapid Chess Floating trophy and a cash prize of R700.
Second Prize was shared by Sayen Naidu (Class of 2010), Mndeni Njapha and Sizwe Ndlovu – they each received R280.
The Best Junior Player was a DHS Grade 10 Boy, Sachen Pather – he received a cash prize of R300.
The Second Junior Player was also a Grade 9 DHS Boy, Naseem Essa – he received R200.
A huge thank you to Rahul Beekrum, Mr Lewis, Mrs Reddy and Mr Wehrmeyer for all their assistance in ensuring the success of the day.
