Water Polo

vs Maritzburg College

DHS played against our oldest rivals, Maritzburg College in a full round of Water Polo fixtures. Unfortunately, the 1st Team fixture was called off at half-time due to a lightning storm.

Fortunately, before that a number of fixtures took place and we are very proud of the following results:

14B        won 7-4
14A        drew 7-7
15B        won 11-6
15A        won 13-6
2nds      won 8-7

Top 10 Tournament

The DHS U15A Water Polo Team participated in The Top 10 Schools Tournament which took place at Northwood. Our boys had a fantastic tournament in which they produced and incredibly exciting brand of Water Polo that always had the crowd in delight. We reached the Final of the tournament where we were ultimately undone by a powerful Hilton College side who are currently ranked first in the country.

Our results were as follows:

Kearsney                     won 13-0
Invitational Team     won 15-0
Michaelhouse            won 7-3
Northwood                 won 7-0

After a clean sweep of the group stages we played the host school, Northwood, with the fixture now being the Semi-Final. Our boys were simply outstanding in this fixture, which resulted in a comfortable 10-1 victory.

We came up against Hilton College in the Final in what was a great spectacle of Waterpolo. The final score being recorded was 10-6 in Hilton College’s favour.

Reddam House Helderfontein Inspire Cup Tournament

The DHS 2023 Stayers Water Polo took part in the Reddam House Helderfontein Inspire Cup tournament.

This team, which is made primarily of Grade 9 and 10 players, did extremely well, finishing in third position. The boys were very unfortunate not to make the final, after losing to the hosts.

The results were as follows:
Jeppe (2)              won 23-0
Pretoria Boys     won 20-1

Cricket

vs Kearsney

The DHS U15A Cricket Team continued their sensational run of results this year after convincingly beating Kearsney by 8 wickets. The Kearsney U15A batted first, scoring 98/5. The DHS U15A Team chased it down, ending with a total of 102/2 and winning by 8 wickets.

The U14A Cricket Team shared a spectacular fixture with the Kearsney U14A Team, with the game ending in a tie.  DHS batted first and scored 127/7. With Kearsney chasing, they were poised to win the fixture with the score being tied with 1 delivery to go. Our young Horseflies never gave up and produced a run out on the last ball! This resulted in the fixture being a tie.

Cricket 1st Team at Michaelmas Week

The DHS 1st XI got off to a fantastic start to the prestigious Michaelmas Cricket week with a 4 wicket win against Hudson Park.

Hudson Park batted first with School producing a superb bowling performance, dismissing the opposition for 108 runs with Brayden Naidoo taking 4 wickets for 34 runs after 8 overs. DHS chased the total down, ending on 109 for 6 with Nkululeko Masondo scoring a crucial 38 not out.

The Team continued their great start to the Michaelmas Cricket Week with a brilliant 11 run victory against Jeppe.

DHS batted first and scored a competitive 238/9, with Nkululeko Masondo once again the top scorer as he scored 43 runs.

However, the true standout performance was produced by our incredibly talented all-rounder, Semal Pillay. Semal delivered a world-class bowling performance as he took 5 wickets. He finished with the phenomenal figures of 5 wickets for 24 runs after 8 overs. These figures ensured the restriction of Jeppe to a total of 227/9. We feel it’s also very important for people to know that Semal is still ONLY U15! Despite his age, he shows both ability and maturity well beyond his years which enables him to open the bowling and bat as a top order batsman.

Cricket Stayers

Throughout the short October holiday break, the Shedders Cricket Festival was held in KwaZulu-Natal with DHS being a host school and Blackmore House providing accommodation to visiting teams.

The Shedders Cricket Festival is unique in the sense that the school teams who participated were all ‘Stayers’, making it a Stayers Cricket Festival. Unfortunately, many fixtures were affected by rain, but we would like to make special mention of the following DHS Boys who produced standout individual performances in the festival:

Bayanda Majola took 5 wickets for 30 runs against Grey College!
Krian Jugoo scored 73 runs against Jeppe
Josh van Biljon scored 105 not out against Jeppe!

All three of these boys play for the DHS U15A side which speaks immense volume for their talent and potential future in the sport of Cricket. Congratulations to all three of you on these brilliant performances and well done to all involved on a fantastic festival.

U14A Cricket @ Charl van Rooyen Festival

Our U14As participated in the Prestigious Charl van Rooyen Cricket Festival which is was hosted by Affies in Pretoria. Our boys suffered two losses in their first two fixtures, but bounced back beautifully and produced a fantastic performance to seal their first victory of the festival, beating Jeppe by 6 wickets.

Tristan Quail on his 5 wickets for 40 runs;
Taine Havemann scoring 47 not out;
Rahul Chetty scoring 41 runs.
